Description

  • Johannes Huibert Prins
  • Landscape with a brick house and a horsecart alongside a canal
  • indistinctly signed in monogram lower right: JHP
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Reverend Francis H. D. Smythe;
Acquired from the above by Alistair Macewen, Edinburgh, in 1912;
Thence by descent to the current owner.

Condition

The canvas is in stable condition, it is unlined but has probably been re-stretched in the past and thus the paint surface is somewhat pressed. Otherwise the paint surface is in very good condition: the colours have not deteriorated and details remain very crisp. The paint is covered by a dirty old varnish. Restoration is limited to some tiny specks of retouching in the lower centre, and one or two spots in the sky.
