Description
- John Paul
- London: View of Old London Bridge
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has been relined and is secure. The paint surface is without flakings and is stable and flat. There are a number of slightly discoloured retouchings visible to the naked eye at close proximity. However, the lighting effect the artist has achieved (reflecting in the water and across the various buildings that make up the bridge) dominates the view so that these retouchings do little to distract or irritate. The colours are vivid and the figures are well-defined and full of character.
Unser UV light one can see small retouchings throughout, with larger areas in the upper right corner, the centre of the clouds. There are two repaired tears in the canvas, one arrow shapes tear in the uper left corner, and a pair of small parallel tears in the upper right edge.
This lot is offered ina plain gilt frame, with a a handful of tiny knocks, but otherwise only in need of a good clean.
