Catalogue Note
The sitter appears to be a successful European merchant with Eastern connections. He wears an 'orientalised' ensemble as a way of showing off his full- integration into a foreign environment. The fleshtones and the texture of the rich fabric are very comparable to Joshua Reynold's Mrs Baldwin (1763–1839), in Eastern Dress, at Compton Verney, Warwickshire, which suggests this could be by an English artist painting commemorative portraits of traders in the East.
