The picture is slightly cooler in tone than the catalogue illsutration suggests. The canvas has a recent relining and is in a very good state of conservation. There is frame rubbing in the upper left and left hand edges, this has been overpainted - these are right beside the frame and do not interfere with the compsition as a whole. Details like the throng of putti in the background and the modelling of the swirling clouds are very effective, especially when the sweeping composition is viewed from a short distance in its entirety. There are scattered small retouchings throughout the sky, many of which have slightly discoloured, however they are not distracting to the naked eye.The paint surface is thick and without signs of any major flaking. The colours are rich and contrasts strong making this a dramatic work. Inspection under UV light reveals the aforementioned retouchings scattered throughout the sky and to some of te figures. This lot is offered in a gilt frame with decorative mouldings in the inner band, some cracks to the gilding but otherwise in solid structural condition.
