Description
- An artist in his studio preparing charcoal, a painter working on a landscape at an easel beyond
- oil on canvas, unframed
Provenance
Anonymous sale, Germany (no date), lot 46 (as Spanish School, 17th Century), according to a sale label on the reverse.
Condition
This unframed canvas has an old relining which is still effective. The paint surface is very dirty and under a discoloured varnish. The naked eye no areas of noticeable damage are apparent, though an old small tear can be seen upper right. The brushy impasto is still vibrant, for example in the whites upper and lower right. The right hand of the sitter does appear to be abraded, in contrast to the rest of the paint surface. Inspection under ultraviolet light is inconclusive due to the thick discoloured varnish.
Cleaning the paint surface would greatly improve the tonality.
