Description

  • Henri Gascar
  • Portrait of a court beauty, reclining in a landscape, a château in the distance
  • oil on canvas, in a period carved and gilded frame

Provenance

Sale, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 1923, as Mignard (according to an old label on the reverse).

Condition

The canvas has an old, stable relining. For a canvas of this size the paint surface is very well preserved, with much of the detail and impasto beautifully intact. There is a prominent, continuous seam that runs horizontally the length of the picture 7.5cm from the top edge. Retouchings along the left half of the line are now discoloured. There are some very small areas of damage that are visible to the naked eye, namely 3 small losses centre left. Inspection under UV light shows an old localised areas of retouching, most of which is discoloured and visible to naked eye, such as that on the lady's bosom. The varnish is discoloured and uneven, the painting would benefit from an all-over professional clean which would enhance and accentuate the numerous well preserved elements. This lot is offered in a carved gilt wood frame with only a few losses.
