Thence by descent.
Condition
The picture is paler and more muted in tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas has been lined and the paint surface is in god overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint except for to a little knock upper centre measuring approx. 1 in. There is otherwise a blanching varnish and surface dirt is present. Examination under ultraviolet reveals scattered retouching throughout the sky and some more recent minor flecks of strengthening on the architecture; it also confirms the presence of the mottled varnish. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame with some minor losses.
