Description

  • Philips Wouwerman
  • Hare coursing in a landscape, with a ruined bridge and fortified tower beyond
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Acquired in Frankfurt on the advice of the artist Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein (1751-1828), by an ancestor of the present owner for 177 fl. in 1829;

Thence by descent.

Condition

The picture is more muted in tone and darker in colour than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas appears to be lined and the paint surface is in good overall condition with no damage or loss of paint. There is a thick varnish and surface dirt overall. Examination under ultraviolet reveals a few flecks of old retouching visible in the sky and the background landscape but otherwise the varnish impedes inspection. Over the picture is in good country house condition. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in good overall condition.
