Description

  • The Annunciation
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Acquired by the family between 1815-1830;
Thence by descent.

Condition

The colours ar less acidic than the catalogue illustration would suggest. Painted on a stable four piece bevelled panel with a very slight bow. The paint surface is in good overall condition however the horizontal panel joins, as well as what maybe an old repaired split, resembling a panel join along the lower edge, are visible under a raking light. There is also old restored flaking lower right and some minor associated paint losses as well as some restoration to what maybe an old area of damage upper left. There is varnish and surface dirt overall. Examination under ultraviolet reveals retouching to the panel joins and confirms the presence of the aforementioned retouching as well as the varnish which impedes inspection but it looks as if there is otherwise little intervention and the picture is in good country house condition. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in good overall condition.
