Description
- Antwerp School, 16th century
- The Adoration of the Magi
- oil on marouflaged panel
Provenance
Anonymous sale ('The Property of a Lady'), London, Sotheby's, 3 July 1985, lot 31 (as Netherlandish School, circa 1520), where acquired by the late owner.
Condition
The original panel has been marouflaged and there appears to be horizontal additions of 1 inch running along the top and bottom margins. There are a series of old horizontal splits/ cracks in the panel visible under the paint surface and presumably stabilized by the marouflaging. The paint surface appears to be otherwise in fairly good condition under a glossy yellowed varnish. Old retouching work is visible to the naked eye along the aforementioned splits/ cracks and scattered elsewhere. These are confirmed under UV light which is otherwise impeded by the aforementioned varnish. This painting is offered unframed.
