Description
- Francesco Cairo
- Judith with the head of Holofernes

Condition
The canvas has a relatively recent lining which is stable. The paint surface is a little worn in the darker shades, such as in the background above Judith and in the shaded areas of the figures themselves. There is a restored vertical scratch running through the right part of Judith's head, a circular restored damage in the background to the right of her head, just beneath her right shoulder and on her hand. There is some restoration around the mouth of her maidservant and scattered minor retouchings throughout.
Sold unframed.

Catalogue Note
On the basis of style the painting should be dated to 1645-50, when the artist was at the peak of his career. The bejewelled head-dress and the shimmering robes find parallels in the Artemisia in a private collection.1
The attribution has been endorsed by Professor Francesco Frangi following first-hand inspection of the work (private communication with the present owner).
