Literature

H.U. Beck, Jan Van Goyen 1596-1656, Doornspijk 1987, vol. III, p. 194, cat. no. 441A.

Condition

The panel is uncradled, flat and stable. The painting is in reasonable overall condition. The surface is now dirty and its varnish yellowed. The paint surface has suffered from wear where the paint is more thinly applied, and the ridges of the wood grain are thus clearly visible in the sky. The more thickly painted areas are, however, all extremely well preserved. Ultra-violet light reveals numerous re-touchings to the wear across the wood grain, but no major damages of other areas of repainting. Offered with a later ebonised wood frame with gilt inner slip, several small damages.
