Condition
The support is made of a single uncradled panel. The paint surface is secure and stable; the varnish clear and even. There are no major damages visible; the painting looks to be in good condition. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals very little retouching. The varnish fluoresces in an opaque manner, masking any earlier restoration, if there is any.
Offered in a carved gilt tortoiseshell frame, with a sage green insert.

Catalogue Note
There are at least three almost identical versions of this composition recorded by both Greindl (see Literature) and the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague. The different versions have been confused up to now, but it has been possible to distinguish them by closely comparing size, signature, and the number of water drops on the ledge. One of the versions, a slightly smaller picture measuring 24 by 35.5 cm., with only four water drops and signed in monogram lower left: VH, was sold in these Rooms, 6 December 2007, lot 9, for £75,000.
