Description

  • The Descent from the Cross
  • oil on oak panel

Condition

The oak panel is flat and uncradled, with no sign of splits in the wood apparent from the reverse. There is a vertical split measuring about 26 cm. starting 11 cm. from the right hand margin. The paint surface is very dirty and covered by a yellow varnish, the craquelure is pronounced and may need some attention in the future. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows that the painting has been unevenly cleaned, and a campaign of very old retouchings are visible throughout. Offered in a gilt wood frame with several losses, but structurally sound.
