Condition
In good overall condition. The panel is cradled and stable with an old series of repaired vertical cracks or splits, the largest running down through the face of Saint John and the torso of Christ. The varnish layer is patchy and uneven. Discoloured restoration is visible to all the splits, but otherwise the paint surface is secure and stable with only localised retouchings.

Catalogue Note
Stijn Alsteen (see Literature) groups this panel with five others of similar scale and consistent in style that were almost certainly made as portable triptychs. Three of the others correspond in composition with drawings by Pieter Coecke van Aelst, with whom this work, along with the others, should be associated.
