Description
- Rome, a view of Piazza Navona from the south
- oil on canvas, unlined
Condition
This unlined canvas is in good condition, well stretched and flat. The paint surface is secure, and there are no signs of flaking or loss of paint. There is a very fine craquelure throughout, concentrated in the sky.
Inspection under UV light reveals specks of retouching in the sky, concentrated along a line by the upper edge resulting from pressure from the stretcher over time. Further concentration of small restorations in an area in the upper left corner. These have all been very delicately executed and do not at all disturb viewing with the naked eye.
There is a line of restoration along the stretcher mark in the lower part, soncentrated on the two horse-drawn carriages. Details of the figures selling their wares, promenading, riding, travelling in carriages, as well as the water falling from the fountains and the architecture, are all well preserved and lovely to behold up close.
This lot is offered in an an eighteenth century carved and gilded, highly decorative frame, in very good condition.
