Catalogue Note

Scholars have been divided over the attribution of this drawing.  In a letter dated 1985, George Knox attributed the drawing to Lorenzo Tiepolo.  However, J. Byam Shaw, who wrote to the owner of the work in 1989, was more convinced that the study was by Domenico and even suggested that Giovanni Battista may have executed it.  Byam Shaw did point out that the model used in the present sheet must be the same as in Domenico Tiepolo's etching, Vecchio Barbuto, in the Raccolta di Teste series.

This drawing is clearly based on or influenced by Domenico's head studies.  The highly finished nature and execution of this work suggest that it may have been intended for a print, or have been made after a lost painting.
