Condition

The sheet has not been laid down and the extreme edges are attached to the mat on the reverse. As visible in the catalogue illustration there is a small number of scattered tiny spots of foxing, aside from which this work is in good condition. Presented frame and glazed, the extreme edges of the sheet covered by the mat and not visible framed. A watercolour by Chassériau, also dating from 1846 and probably depicting the same sitter, is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.1
