Condition

Good condition for an object of this type and age. Weathered and worn from exposure and handling. Shallow surface losses including to proper left leg. Areas of erosion to back and reverse of proper left shoulder. Marks, nicks, scratches, abrasions, small losses and cracks consistent with age and use. Fine surface of crusty, ritually-applied material. Some losses to surface around chin. Fitted with removable wood base.

Catalogue Note

The present figure belongs to the rare Dogon style known as Tomo-ka.  Originating from the plain of the Seno River where the Dogon mixed with the Bamana and possibly Mossi populations, sculptures of this style are distinguished by the angular stylization of the body, the crested coiffure, and semicircular ears.
