Catalogue Note
Vaughan Williams's Toward the Unknown Region for choir and orchestra, a glorious setting of Whitman's poem "Darest thou now, O soul", established the composer as one of the leading musical voices of the twentieth century. It was written between 1904 and 1906, and published in vocal score in 1907. With a few exceptions (e.g. the poco animando designation on p. 17), the alterations and corrections here were adopted in the revised edition of the vocal score published by Stainer & Bell in 1918.
