Catalogue Note

The Second Horn Concerto dates from 1942 and was the first of the fine lyrical orchestral works from Strauss's final period.  This is evidently a sketch for a full orchestral tutti in the first movement Allegro, although the music is continuous and there are no strict divisions. The themes and textures are similar to the tutti found near the close of the Allegro in the final version (at Figure 15), but, whereas that marks the return to the home key, in this draft the home key is only reached at the end of the manuscript.
