Catalogue Note
RARE: We have no record of autograph music by Flotow (1812-1883), the composer of Martha (1847), at auction for over twenty-five years. These waltzes are apparently unpublished. Flotow spent most of the years 1828-1848 in Paris. His first great operatic success was Le naufrage de Méduse produced at the Théâtre de la Renaissance in 1839, at around the time of his additions to the present manuscript.
The remaining dances, which have all been transcribed by a single copyist, are arrangements of orchestral waltzes published in the 1830s: Johann Strauss, Mein schönster Tag in Baden, Walzer für Pianoforte op.58 (1832) and Erinnerung an Pesth Walzer op.66 (1834). Several other pieces appeared in the series "Lyra" (Prague, 1836-1837), including Paulus's Nachtwänderlin-Walzer, Labitzky's waltzes and the various "Galopps" by Leicht, Till and Mascha.
