Catalogue Note

Sometime in the future, humanity will look back into the first decade of 21st Century and try to remember what defined it. On one hand, it has survived the Wall Street meltdown in 2008 and the ensuing global downturn, and on the other, it saw the most number of billionaires and highest sum of their combined wealth in the world. This jarring contradiction truly resonates with the present work “Gangster Nation.” With their cynical wit and sharp humor, Indieguerillas captures the essence of the modern world in all its facets. Behind this blasé façade is a sincere appreciation for roots and tradition. They incorporate cultural symbols such as the Indonesian wayang puppets and the banyan tree in ways that the younger generations could relate to. If you can’t beat them, join them; indeed, Indieguerillas are criticizing themselves as much as they are commenting on the consumer society today. Hence, the present work takes the form of a ‘skateboard’ that is layered with derivative cultural symbols – an original creation that crosses both worlds.
