Catalogue Note
Originaire de Besançon, Jean-Baptiste Clésinger commence son apprentissage dans l’atelier de son père. En remportant le premier prix de Rome, en 1832, il s'ouvre les portes de l’atelier de Bertel Thorvaldsen. De retour à Paris, quatre années plus tard, il intègre l’atelier de David d’Angers qu'il quitte bientôt pour partir en Suisse puis à Florence. De retour à Paris depuis deux années, il épouse la fille de George Sand en 1847 et, cette même année, il rencontre un vif succès grâce aux oeuvres qu'il expose au Salon. Dès lors, Clésinger reçoit de prestigieuses commandes officielles. Après un second séjour à Rome, de 1856 à 1864, il s'installe à nouveau à Paris et continue d’exposer au Salon jusqu’en 1880. Ce buste éminemment romantique dépeint la jeune bergère toute absorbée et comme pétrifiée par les voix miraculeuses qu'elle entend. Le visage marqué d’une expression inquiète, Jeanne d’Arc lève le regard vers le ciel. Le modelé délicat du marbre estompe ses traits légèrement androgynes. Finement sculptés, ses cheveux courts contrastent avec sa robe de paysanne agrémentée de rubans.
