Condition
Very good condition overall. Minor chips and lacks to the edges of the drapery and of the base. A few minor dents to his hair, forehead and proper left cheek.

Catalogue Note
A son arrivée à Paris, le marseillais Jean-Joseph Foucou intégra l'atelier de Jean-Jacques Caffieri (1725-1792). Prix de Rome en 1769, il s'installe dans la capitale italienne en 1771 et y demeure quatre années. Reçu à l'Académie Royale en 1785, il participe notamment à la décoration de la Colonne Vendôme et de l'Arc du Carrousel. L'identification de ce buste au sculpteur Antoine-Louis Chaudet est fondée sur la base de portraits dont celui peint vers 1800 par Louis-Léopold Boilly (musée des Beaux-Arts de Lille, inv. n° P 365). Il présente également de grandes similitudes avec un autre portrait de Chaudet par Boilly dans son tableau intitulé Réunion d'artistes dans l'atelier d'Isabey (musée du Louvre, inv. n° C.P.P. 35). La ressemblance est encore plus frappante avec une miniature figurant le sculpteur par Jean-Baptiste Augustin (musée du Louvre, inv. n° 23589).
