Catalogue Note
The arms on the base are those of James Hewitt, Lord Lifford (1709-1789), created Baron 1768 and Viscount 1781. The son of William Hewitt, mercer and draper, sometime Mayor of Coventry, he was called to the Bar in 1742. M.P. for Coventry 1761-66, Privy Council 1767, Lord Chancellor of Ireland 1767 until his death in 1789 in Dublin; he is buried there in Christ Church Cathedral.
The gift is recorded in Calendar of Ancient Records of Dublin, edit. by Lady Gilbert, 1905 p. 22, that in the year 1769 it was resolved to honor the Lord Chancellor "in testimony of the sense entertained of his distinguished learning, ability, integrity and virtue, whereupon it was ordered that the freedom of this city be presented to the right honourable James, Lord Lifford, lord chancellor of Ireland in a gold box, the same not to exceed twenty guineas in value to be paid by the city treasurer and allowed in his accounts."
