Catalogue Note
While many avant-garde artists of the early 20th century took influence from the arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas, Man Ray's association with such objects was quite different. Rather than seeking to appropriate motifs and forms in the manner of the Cubists, Man Ray used his skill as a photographer to cast these objects in a new light, not as ethnographical curiosities but as powerful and dignified sculptures. Employing masterful lighting and innovative framing, Man Ray's occasionally theatrical compositions where they might serve as a prop or be juxtaposed with his models, brought these inanimate forms to life, contributing to the wider appreciation of these objects as works of art.
Man Ray photographed this sculpture at the home of Danish collector Carl Kjersmeier. Today it belongs to the Nationalmuseet, Copenhagen.
