Catalogue Note
The 'grape cluster' was a design favored by Seaman Schepps because it presented opportunities to use cabochon stones of different hues. The most famous version of this design was created in 1941 for Doris Duke and features deep violet blue and purple sapphires with carved emerald leaves; she wore this brooch with other complementary pieces by Schepps. For a history of the grape cluster design see Seaman Schepps: A Century of New York Jewelry Design by Amanda Vaill and Janet Zapata, pages 80-82.
