In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion. Illustrations in the catalogue may not be actual size. Prospective purchasers are reminded that, unless the catalogue description specifically states that a stone is natural, we have assumed that some form of treatment may have been used and that such treatment may not be permanent. Our presale estimates reflect this assumption.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
Catalogue Note
With their large plateau-like facets and creatively carved backs, these mesmerizing stones encompass the legacy that is the Munsteiner family of stone sculptors. The two lots offered here showcase stones cut by Tom Munsteiner, who was trained by his father Bernd, also known as the ‘Father of the Fantasy Cut.’ Beginning in the 1960s, Bernd Munsteiner perfected the ‘Fantasy Cuts’ which replace traditionally faceted stones in favor of those with uniquely styled facets that create spellbinding stones which are objets d’art in their own right.
Centering mint green tourmalines and peridots, the above lots accentuate the Munsteiner method of enhancing the innate beauty of stones through manipulation of form. The stones feature what Tom calls ‘ZippZipp’ lines, which are crosshatch-like cuts along the reverse of a stone which serve to create hypnotic facets visible from the front-facing broad shapes. Housed within a textured gold cuff studded with various green-hued stones and articulated earrings which reveal a 360-degree view of the ‘Fantasy Cuts,’ these jewels wonderfully enhance the contemporary elegance that the Munsteiner cuts exemplify.
