Catalogue Note
Born in Germany, Koch studied at Goldsmiths College, before establishing her small studio in Archway, North London. Hand-building the majority of her works, which explore themes of balance and spatial relationships, her most recent work, of which this is an impressive and exciting example, moves away from her traditionally favoured medium of low-fired, burnished earthenware to a new high-fired stoneware with pared back designs. Koch combines rough, gritty black clay with delicately inlaid white porcelain, scraping back to create a strong graphic design in contrasting colours.
