Catalogue Note
Elizabeth Fritsch blurs the lines between potter, sculptor and painter in her captivatingly detailed, geometric designed works. Adapting the vessel to emphasis the often distorted design, her works become illusions in bright greens, deep blues, ochre reds and sandy yellows. Studying at the Royal College of Art in the artistic heyday of the 1960s, she trained under Hans Coper and the father of British Pop Eduardo Paolozzi, developing a clean, authentic postmodern European aesthetic through her painted slipware decorations. Hand-building her forms, Fritsch works directly in clay, making no preparatory drawings or sketches prior to her workings, which flow with rhythmic figures and harmonious colours, captured brilliantly in the present work.
