Condition

This work on canvas is unlined. The tacking edges have been reinforced, and the canvas has been stretched onto a new stretcher. There are no reinforcements on the reverse. The paint layer is very fresh and healthy. There is a vertical scrape in the lower center in the feet of the figures. There is also a dent and a little bit of paint loss here. There is an original canvas join running vertically through the composition that remains undisturbed. Under ultraviolet light, one can see a few retouches in the lower left corner, in the upper left edge, a few spots of retouch in the red coat of the figure in the center right and a spot or two in the cross being carried by the figure in the center of the left side. The condition of the painting is otherwise extremely good.(This condition report has been provided courtesy of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.)
