Catalogue Note

Olga de Amaral first turned textile arts from a primarily two-dimensional representational art form into a three-dimensional, abstract art form in the 1960s. Since then, she has remained loyal to the wall as her central structural support. De Amaral works with soft materials, linen, wool, cotton. She uses natural dyes. Sometimes she may even color the threads with plain chalk. The surface structure achieved constitutes complete harmony between technique, material and color.

"From her first appearance on the fiber art scene more than four decades ago, de Amaral has always had a definite signature…Meant to be viewed on both sides, de Amaral’s wall hangings seem to have a direct connection to the woven clothing of early Andean weavers." (1)
