Description

  • bronze
cast with a pear-shaped body rising from a splayed foot to a waisted neck and flared mouthrim, the neck cast with a pair of handles shaped in the form of an elephant’s head and decorated with a band of archaistic designs and a thick band enclosing four pairs of stylised taotie masks against a leiwen ground, a taotie band bordering the foot, the patina of a variegated reddish-brown tone

Condition

There is extensive oxidisation to the surface. The base has been consolidated, possibly in antiquity. General surface wear to the body, possibly repatination over earlier repairs.
