Maker’s mark of William Elliott
The basin oblong shaped, the ewer shaped as an inverted helmet on spreading foot, with leaf-capped scroll handle, each has a gadroon border and is engraved with foliate scrolls and flowers, as well as Royal arms.
The Royal arms are those of Princess Sophia, the fifth of the six daughters of George III and Queen Charlotte. Queen Charlotte was protective of her daughters, attempting to shield them from marriage, and limit their suitors.
