each modelled as an oval head of overlapping puce-ribbed, green-edged leaves, a single curled leaf forming the knop of the cover, red anchor mark.

Condition
The cover of one has been broken across in two pieces at one end and repaired.and there is a 1/4-in. shallow chip to the edge in the same area. its base and the second tureen are in good condition.

Adapted from a Meissen model of about 1750, Chelsea lettuce tureens are mentioned in the 1755 Chelsea Sale Catalogue, First Day's Sale, Monday March 10th, lots 21 and 34 as "Two small fig leaves and 2 cabbage lettices, for a desart" and then again throughout the sixteen-day sale catalogue. See the Appendix to Chelsea Porcelain at Williamsburgh by John Austin for a facsimile of the catalogue. A similar lettuce tureen and cover from the Collection of Dr. Sidney and Susan Merians, was sold in these rooms, October 22, 2010, lot 20.
