Catalogue Note

The illustration depicts the mythical warriors, Rama and Lakshmana, atop a richly caparisoned elephant, accompanied by their faithful follower Hanuman. The figure clad in orange robes at the lower left is possibly prince Bharatha and the scene very likely depicts Rama’s triumphant return to Ayodha.
For another illustration depicting the same scene see Sotheby’s New York, March 22, 1989, Lot 128.
