Catalogue Note
The Harivamsa, an account of the lineage of Hari (Vishnu), is a work of Sanskrit literature that serves as a supplement to the great epic, the Mahabharata. The text includes a tale wherein lord Krishna flaunts his love for his wife Satyabhama by stealing the much coveted Parijat tree, which had miraculously blossomed when the cosmic ocean was churned for ambrosia. This fine painting illustrates the moment when Krishna gifts this celestial plant to his beloved queen.
