The illustrations depict the conflict between King Kaushika (who later became the sage Vishwamitra) and sage Vasistha. In the present illustration we see Vasistha turning back the arrows projected at him by Kaushika and his army. The second painting depicts King Kaushika departing from sage Vasistha's hermitage after being pardoned by him.

Condition

Vishwamitra Faces Vasistha in Combat (illustrated): Good overall condition. Salmon pink folio border not seen in catalog illustration with some fraying and tears to edges. Some creases to the lower right edge of image, seen in catalog illustration. Slight rubbing to pigment on the mount of the hillock at lower center. Two tears to the paper on middle center edge and lower left edge of image and folio border have been repaired as has a further tear on the upper edge. A tear on the upper left edge of image and folio border has not been repaired. The yellows and reds are slightly lighter and brighter in the actual painting. Vishwamitra Leaves Vasistha's Hermitage (not illustrated): Good overall condition. Salmon pink folio border with slight fading and stains. Some rubbing, losses and creases on lower right edge of floral folio border. Crease to hillock on middle right edge.
