Catalogue Note

As Ghislaine Wood describes: "Dalí saw no distinction between his work in painting and in jewelry. In his text for the Owen Cheatham exhibition catalogue he summed up the big themes explored in the 'small worlds' of precious metal and stone: 'In my jewels, as in all my art, I create what I love. In some you will note an architectonic sense—as you will in certain of my paintings; again logarithmic law is evident; again the interrelation of spirit and matter; of time and space'" (quoted in Ghislaine Wood, op. cit., p. 225).

Originally conceived in 1949, purportedly for Elsa Schiaparelli, Dalí's Telephone Ear Clips "The Persistence of Sound" plays on the themes and associations that obsessed the artist's thoughts, incorporating one of the most iconic Dalínian images: the telephone. Each clip is designed as a stylized receiver, the ear and mouth pieces accented with single-cut diamonds terminating on a faceted ruby and cabochon emerald respectively, suspending matching pear-shaped drops.
