Condition

The canvas is lined, and a board has been possibly placed between the two layers of canvas. There is a layer of milky varnish preventing the UV light from fully penetrating, however UV examination reveals a few fine lines of retouching to the center of the right edge. Catalogue Note

Madame Isabelle Viviani, married to René Viviani, president of the Council of Ministers during the first World War, was a vigorously active supporter and founder of charitable communities in aid of affected Frenchmen during conflict. Born into a family of politicians and intellectuals, she further founded the Hôtel Biron in Paris, now housing the Musée Rodin, where children and the wives of soldiers at war could start an apprenticeship.
