Catalogue Note

The present work depicts Chateau de l'Arc, Buffet’s house where he lived from 1956 until 1964. Situated in the hills surrounding Aix en Provence, long a haven for artists, it was here where he celebrated his 30th birthday, separated from Pierre Bergé, and where his wife Annabel Schwob later came to live with him. Whilst in residence there, he painted an impressive narrative of the life of Christ for the house’s adjacent chapel, a work which was later offered to Pope Paul VI and which now hangs in the Vatican Museum.
