Catalogue Note
The Beta 21 movement was released at the Basel Fair in April 1970. It was the product of nearly 10 years of research and development by C.E.H., or Centre Électronique Horloger, a consortium of many Swiss watch firms (including Rolex) who were interested in developing an electric watch movement. Edmond Zaugg, a talented engineer of his time, was designated to be project manager in charge of the development of the electronic calibre within the Rolex manufacture. As soon as the Beta 21 calibre was released, Rolex launched this model, Ref. 5100. Made in a limited production of only 1000 examples, the present example was given to Mr Zaugg to reward him for his brilliant work. In recent years, these models have become very collectible due to their rarity and distinctive styling. In addition to its provenance, the present reference 5100/8 is extremely rare due to its dark blue dial which is a feature very seldom seen.
