Production of reference 3940 began in 1986 as the successor to reference 3448 and reference 3450. The present lot, made in 1987, belongs to the first series of this model. Production continued for over 20 years, with only some subtle changes made to the dial on later series. The design of the reference 3940 is such a classic that when it was replaced in 2007 with the reference 5140, the differences between the two models were nearly imperceptible.
