Catalogue Note

Reference 3970 was launched after the success of the exceptional and iconic reference 2499. One main difference between the two models is the addition of the leap year indicator to the subsidiary dial at 3 and the 24-hour indication at 9. The design of the case of reference 3970, with its down-turned, fluted lugs, was clearly influenced by the form of reference 2499.

The offered lot is from the third series of reference 3970 and it is rare to find it in its pink gold version.

Reference 3970 was made in 4 series or generations between 1986 and 2004.

- First series with snap-on back (1986-1988)
- Second series with screw-on back with rectangular indexes and feuille hands (1987-1990)
- Third series with screw-on back and lapidated or "obus" indexes (1989-1996)
- Fourth series is defined by a different movement number series and folding buckle (1996-2004).

In 2004, reference 3970 was replaced by reference 5970.

The model is illustrated in Huber, M. & Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Wristwatches, Second Edition, p. 305.
