Condition

The panel is sound. There is a layer of surface dirt. There are frame abrasions along the edges. There is a small spot of glue at the bottom edge, to the left of the centre. UV light reveals some possible very minor retouching to the waves, and certain pigments in the foreground and the sky fluoresce. Held in a black painted wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

Pokhitonov’s beach scenes at La Panne are among his loveliest works and include studies of the dunes, approaching storms, the sandbanks at dawn and at dusk. The interchange of blues, greens and purples that thread the line of the horizon and the near tropical turquoise of the North sea at midday make the present oil a particularly attractive depiction of light moving across a seascape.
