Catalogue Note

In 1914 the Academy of Arts sent Alexei Kravchenko and the sculptor Vasily Vatagin to India, British Ceylon and Japan, an extensive journey which Kravchenko revisited often. His Indian landscapes are overtly exotic, often resembling multi-coloured theatre designs. He uses detail deliberately sparingly, merging architectural and natural forms. with a soft range of colour.
