Condition

Age cracks to rosewood on sides with some lifting and buckling to veneers as well. Some marks to sides possibly from water damage. Light pitting to pewter. Bottom refitted. Losses to proper right side of top section. Scratches, patches, and nicks to wood. Losses, restorations, and age cracks to inlay also with some lifting and buckling. Solid overall condition could benefit from restoration. Old wood worm damage, not extensive.

A very similar cabinet en armoire, circa 1680, possibly from the same workshop is in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris is illustrated Chefs d'oeuvre du Musée des Arts Décoratifs, catalogue, 1985, pp. 42-43. A bureau of the same date, also in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, and decorated with pewter inlay on an amaranth ground, is illustrated A.M. Quette, Le Mobilier Français, Louis XIII/Louis XIV, Paris, 1996, p. 81. Another armoire à deux corps of this date, decorated with floral marquetry and which incorporates similarly shaped raised panels to the base, in the Musées Municipaux de Bourges, was exhibited "Louis XIV Faste et Décors", Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, May-October 1960, catalogue, no. 46, pl. IX.
