Condition

Overall very good original condition. Please note, this work is glazed terracotta and not earthenware as stated in the printed catalogue. The surfaces with a few minor irregularities, including minute burst air bubbles, inherent to the material and production. With light surface dirt from gentle use. With a few scattered minute chips that reveal the natural terracotta coloration. With one very minute area of surface restoration that appears an area of overpainting , likely to cover a minute loss or scratch to the glaze. This work when viewed in person is slightly more green than it appears in the catalogue illustration. The glazed surfaces with a wonderful painterly expression in the blues, greens and grays throughout. A rare work by the artist to appear on the auction market.

Catalogue Note

IN CONTEXT:
I was introduced to the modernist French ceramicist Valentine Schlegel by the founder of the renowned Galerie Mouvements Moderne, Pierre Staudenmeyer. At the time of the Uig Lodge commission, Schlegel's work was considered experimental and it had not yet resonated with the collecting public. However, between the time of the commission and the assemblage of the collection, her work became widely sought after by knowledgeable and avant-garde collectors. Schlegel’s ceramics are remarkably graceful and fluid.
