Catalogue Note
Depictions of Guanyin atop a lion are referred to as Shi hou Guanyin, or Simhanada Avalokiteshvara, the Guanyin with the lion's roar. The roaring of the lion symbolizes the intensity of the moment of enlightenment. The earliest textual reference to this rare form of Guanyin dates to the eleventh century. Veneration and visualization of this iconographic form is thought to have the ability to heal diseases.
